How To Get A Re-Entry Permit in Thailand

Thailand re-entry permit is essential for those living in Thailand under a long stay visa (for example business or student visa). What Is A Re-Entry Permit?

A re-entry permit is nothing else than a permit that allows a foreigner to re-enter Thailand after exiting the country.
For example, if a foreigners lives in Thailand under a Non Immigrant B visa for business purposes, his visa will be cancelled if he leaves the country without a re-entry permit and a new visa will need to be obtained.
There are two types of re-entry permits, single re-entry or multiple re-entry permit. Obtaining the re-entry permit before leaving the country is therefore mandatory. This permit can be obtained at the immigration office or at international airports directly. Note that this re-entry permit is not an extension of your current visa in any way.

The Different Types Of Re-Entry Permit

A re-entry permit in Thailand is designed for those who wish to leave and return to the kingdom while maintaining their original visa status. There are two types of re-entry permits:

  • Single Re-entry Permit
    - This permit allows for a single exit and re-entry into Thailand.
    - The fee for this permit is THB 1,000.
    - It is suitable for those who plan to travel abroad only once during the visa period.
  • Multiple Re-entry Permit
    - This permit allows for multiple exits and re-entries into Thailand during the visa period.
    - The fee for this permit is THB 3,800.
    - It is suitable for those who plan to travel abroad multiple times during the visa period.

Required Documents To Get A Re-Entry Permit

  • Passport
  • The application form (TM.8)
  • An official colored photo not older than 6 months (4cm x 6cm)
  • The application fee (THB 1,000 or THB 3,800 depending on the re-entry permit)
  • A photocopy of passport page as follow
    - The main page containing your name, passport number, issue and expiry date of the passport
    - Last entry permit stamp
    - Extension Stamp to stay in the Kingdom page
  • Original documents from relevant authorities and 1 copy (if any)

How To Apply For A Re-Entry Permit

Applying for a re-entry permit does require a bit of paperwork. Once the documents are prepared you will need to go to the nearest immigration office. Depending on the time of your visit and the number of people in line, the wait time may vary.
